Speech Therapy 101, Inc. - Empowering Parents
Social Skills Group!

Our social skills groups are 60 min sessions held every Saturday where your child is carefully matched to a small group of other children based on his or her developmental level, and receives instruction in pragmatics, play, language and social skills. Instruction is tailored to the children in the group, but typical examples of covered topics include:

  • conversational skills (e.g., how to initiate a topic with a peer and stay on topic)
  • body boundaries
  • recognizing emotion in self and others and empathy
  • perspective taking
  • dealing with bullying
  • Building friendships
  • manners
  • cooperative play
  • sharing and taking turns
  • perspective taking
  • teamwork

Because Kim is a speech-language pathologist, there is a significant focus on pragmatic language. Kim personally handles all curriculum and instruction planning for social skills groups, with implementation by a team consisting of experienced speech therapists with whom she has worked extensively and whom she oversees.

Social Skills Group: Focus is on building friendships and improving social communication with peers. Children participate in fun games & activities while the speech therapist guide them in refining their peer interaction skills. Children learn to initiating appropriate topics of conversation, conversational turns, topic maintenance, interrupting, listening, initiating, "chatting," perspective taking, respecting the feeling of others, reciprocating questions, making comments, accepting winning or losing a game, sharing, and problem solving social situations.
